La Plata Wilderness Adventures

The La Plata Wilderness encompasses over 24,000 acres within the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado. It is characterized by steep cliffs, sharp ridges, and deep valleys formed by the La Plata Mountains, which rise abruptly above the surrounding landscape. Elevations range from roughly 8,000 to over 13,000 feet, supporting diverse forests of spruce, fir, and aspen, along with alpine meadows at higher elevations. Recreational access is relatively limited due to its rugged topography and fewer developed trails, making it a destination favored by experienced backpackers and climbers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences. Popular activities include multi-day backpacking trips, wildlife photography, and backcountry fishing in the pristine streams. The region's steep cliffs and rugged ridgelines provide dramatic scenery and opportunities for scrambling and technical climbs. The La Plata River, originating within the wilderness, features clear waters supporting native fish species.
